This piece of beech was once part of a piece of Ikea furniture. A lot of Ikea furniture is made of beech.

This came from an ugly grey-ish sample of maple.

Poplar

Technically, poplar is a hardwood, even though it is very soft. Examining the grain very closely does reveal that it's more like the hardwoods in how it's grown. I couldn't get a very clean slice off of it because it's too soft.
