Windows version

  • Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 10
  • Windows .net framework installed.

Antivirus problems

The most common reason for the gear program not running these days (as of 2017) is that a lot of systems are infested with crapware called "Norton antivirus". Unlike writers of viruses, I don't have the time to dedicate to get around this program. The problem is that viruses have gotten more sophisticated and ever changing, so that detecting specific viruses has become a lost cause. So while the Norton crapware (and other so called antivirus software) claims to detect viruses, what it actually does is just flag anything that is not part of a list of programs it knows about as a "Virus".

.Net libraries

  • Windows .net framework 3.5 needs to be present.
The problem some people encounter is that the Windows .net framework may not always be present on Windows XP systems. Most systems that have various software installed will already have the .net framework installed, but a brand new Widows XP install will not. If your system does not have the .net framework installed, you will get the following error:
    Application failed to initialize properly 0xc0000135
You can download and install the .NET version 3.5 framework from Microsoft. It is a rather large download unfortunately:
